Career

After graduating from high school, Pennie entered the workforce directly, pursuing a career in the skilled trades rather than attending college. She gained valuable hands-on experience through construction labor and commercial job site work, where she continued to develop her metal fabrication and trade skills. After exploring different career paths, she transitioned to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and now works with the Department of Conservation and Recreation at Wompatuck State Park. Here, Pennie applies the vocational skills she learned in metal fabrication to support her daily work and long-term career growth.

How BHR prepared Pennie for what she is doing now:

I didn’t have many opportunities to apply my shop skills immediately after graduation, but the hands-on environment at Blue Hills, especially during shop week, gave me a strong foundation and helped me understand the kind of working-class career I wanted to pursue.

Pennie was active in:

JV Softball

DOT certified, Chainsaw Certified, Hoisting Engineer’s license (heavy equipment operator), and CPR certified

Advice to Blue Hills Students:

“Do your time card! Even if your company doesn’t make you, keep track of what you do each day, your schedule, and notes for the next day. It’s a simple habit, but it’s saved me more times than I can count.”
